Why Are More Gay People Voting Republican?

Why Are More Gay People Voting Republican?

Where the Tea Party will begin to falter is that they haven’t done the hard-nosed, messy work of bringing a grassroots movement of people along with them on their political journey. The fact that 25 per cent of the US voting public that identifies as Evangelical Christian and viscerally reject the Democrat’s tacit support of moral bedrock issues like gay rights and access to abortion is the real story. It’s not because the Tea Party exists that these people will vote Republican. What we just witnessed in the US was the inevitable backlash against a reforming government at a time of economic hardship and the Tea Party is merely a convenient, media savvy name to peg this phenomenon on. Where the Tea Party have money, a powerful minority conservative support base and a new found media notoriety the people-power behind the Democrats will prove to be a much more powerful instrument in the long run.The tasks Obama has set upon in his first term of office are momentous (some would even say idealistic) opening up respectful dialogue with the Muslim world, implementing healthcare reform, supporting the goal of abolishing nuclear weapons so it is hardly surprising that the broad US electorate have punished him for moving the agenda too far too quick. The poor results at the recent US mid-term are more about the electorate wishing to see local issues pushed back to the top of the agenda at the White House than they are part of a strategic plan from the Tea Party. At this point, although the right is clearly on the move in the US, there is little about the Tea Party that resembles a long-term paradigm-shifting movement to find that we still need to look elsewhere. The jubilation of the Obama victory has morphed into a sense of soul-searching on the left, or perhaps more accurately, a realignment of the jostling progressive versus conservative political forces swirling around the US.But anyone who compares the fledgling Tea Party movement with the kind of grassroots movement witnessed in the US around Obama’s victory ought to think again. It is more the invention of the right-wing media in America and an elite group of rich Republicans than it is a genuine political movement and this is the very thing that will be its undoing. One of the things that impressed the most about Obama’s campaign in 2008 (and continues to impress) is the sense in which the Obama campaign was truly a ground-up grass roots movement. When I toured around the US in 2008 I felt utterly swept up in the optimism of Obama’s election victory. Its support base is founded more on financing and fiery rhetoric than genuine support of everyday people on the ground. Propelled by the Fox Network in the US, the Tea Party is little more than the same old hard right, anti-immigrant, morally bigoted, anti-big-government rhetoric we have heard before, albeit wrapped up in a shiny new package. In Australia, the Tea Party phenomenon most closely resembles that of One Nation, and I sense it will ultimately go the same way. The Tea Party is not an organised movement with a strategy, a democratic structure or even an office headquarters. In the Mission District of San Francisco on the night of the victory I will never forget the site of crowds of people of all colours and ages dancing in the streets with firecrackers going off everywhere and raw joyful emotion all over peoples faces.Of course, it seems like another world away now after the rather humbling results for the Democrats earlier this month. We still feel we are part of something big – and this is part of the enduring strength of the campaign. The Tea Party on the other hand, seems disparate, disunited and even hollow in comparison. The remarkable momentum and euphoria that culminated in Obama’s victory was the result of the work of thousands of grassroots activists working on the streets and on the internet. To this day, those of us who receive the ‘Organising for America’ emails are kept engaged and informed about Obama’s campaign, including the highs and lows of his first term of office. People who may have otherwise felt isolated in their extreme views are given a home under the umbrella of the Tea Party, but that doesn’t mean it is a legitimate or substantial political movement. In the same way the Australian Greens have utilised the internet effectively here, the US Democrats will hold much more political staying power because they have a much deeper connection with their constituency.

Would A Republican House Try To Impeach Obama?

Would A Republican House Try To Impeach Obama?

I can not say with certainty who is right in politics here, but I can provide evidence of potential political science. Clinton was in grave danger because he was a president "preemptive", working within a political system defined by the other party. in 1993. And while, of course, not all presidents and some pay (with Eisenhower is the most important) are still politically correct, the risk of ending in the crosshairs of Congress is high. This decision was based on his theory of presidential politics, which assesses the chairs of the dominant political regime. Yale political scientist Stephen Skowronek generated a considerable amount of attention (but not as much as his work deserves to be) to state that Bill Clinton was impeached.
