House Votes To Repeal 'don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Every week in cocktail chatter, we tell you what you need to know to sound like an expert at this weekend’s play date, dinner party, or post office meeting.

Well, I want to read the legislation.as far as I remember, don’t ask don’t tell ALLOWED gays to serve in the military. Also, I don’t want to see a fifty four billion dollar budget slid in between lines 9000 and 9010 to save a whale or anything like that, KWIM. I support the theory of the law, to be sure, but our EXTREMELY ETHICAL CONGRESS has a habit of sliding in things where they don’t belong, and I can see some votes being “bought” with some pork. They need to be sure to make it so that gays already employed can keep their jobs.

I’m all for the repeal of it, I just want it to be well done and thought out, not just rushed through the system to garner votes for November. I don’t see it as a compromise, but that is how the legislation was intended. That’s not asking too much. It’s been this long, surely we can wait an extra week or two to make sure it’s done properly. Before it, gay and lesbian women were not allowed to be employed by the military AT ALL.
